Rome

In Rome, the ancient and everyday seem to exist on top of each other. Monumental stone, fountains, laundry, tiny cars, people halfway through a workday. I loved the moments when those worlds met, like a Fiat passing the Colosseum at exactly the right time.

Some of my favorite photographs happened just beyond the monuments: a car tucked beneath overgrown yuccas, waiters standing in the middle of service, a street already in shadow while the rooftops held onto the last of the sun.
